Meta Reportedly Develops Quest 2 VR Air Bridge

Reports have surfaced on Thursday revealing a potential USB adapter that could reshape wireless connections for the Meta Quest 2.

The new ‘VR Air Bridge’ device aims to boost wireless streaming from desktops with no dedicated WiFi card to Quest 2 headsets and is based on the D-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 USB Adapter, according to the report.

It added the new adaptor, which could potentially eliminate network traffic interference from other connections, would likely remain an experimental device and is not currently expected for release.

The news comes after Meta Platforms upgraded the Quest product lineup with version 30 (v30) in June last year with its novel Airlink system, which allows tetherless PCVR game streaming.

The Menlo Park-based firm later updated its software with Quest v37 to include wireless keyboard pairing to headsets via Bluetooth, namely for apps such as Horizon Workrooms and other collaborative enterprise Metaverse platforms.

The wireless keyboard option uses Meta’s Passthrough feature for hand tracking to facilitate inputs to the headset while typing. The tech giant also debuted a software developer kit (SDK) for its Presence Platform to provide support for Logitech K830 and Apple Magic Keyboard.

The news comes as Meta pushes for key developments with its company ambitions, namely after rebranding at the Facebook Connect event in October last year.

Fresh upgrades to the Quest 2 platform could complement future technologies, including the firm’s ReSkin haptic glove system for recreating textures in virtual environments, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) guidance from the firm’s massive upcoming Research SuperCluster.
