NeXR Joins Open-Source Metaverse Standards Forum

0

NeXR Technologies SE has become the latest company to sign up for the Metaverse Standards Forum, a group of over 30 tech firms, associations, and entities developing an interoperable Metaverse, it was revealed on Tuesday.

The Berlin, Germany-based firm hopes to contribute its knowledge of open interoperability standards, avatar development, motion capturing (mocap), and virtual reality technologies for building the Metaverse with collaborators by joining the 35-member group.

The company touts a lineup of cloud-based XR technologies such as its Avatar.Cloud and Event.Cloud platforms, with the former tapping body tracking tools for virtual fitting rooms and the latter leveraging Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to host avatars and metaverse solutions for virtual events.

The Forum aims to develop open Metaverse standards and unite the industry to leverage Web3 technologies to build the Metaverse — widely seen as the successor to the mobile internet.

The news comes as members, which include major companies such as Adobe, Epic Games, the Web3D Consortium, the XR Association, Meta Platforms, and many others, launched the MSF in June to facilitate collaboration across the extended reality (XR) industry to build interoperability standards.

The collection of standard developing organisations (SDOs) aims to promote the widespread adoption of novel standards for the Metaverse as well as reduce reoccurrences of developmental work.

Markus Peuler, Managing Director of NeXR Technologies SE, said in a statement such industry standards were “a crucial catalyst” for delivering novel technology breakthroughs.

He continued, stating,

“The development of industry standards is a crucial catalyst for the breakthrough of new technologies, especially from the user perspective. Breaking down technological barriers not only lowers costs and thus enables mass-market penetration. The resulting increase in the utility of applications also encourages consumers to immerse into the metaverse”

The news comes after The Khronos Group announced it would host the Forum to realise the potential of industry-wide standards building in a bid to tackle obstacles in an open-source Metaverse future.

The association will join members from July to ensure the procurement of “a constellation of interoperability standards”, Khronos President Neil Trevett said at the time.
