IEEE Commits to XR Standards and Security, Exec Says

XR Today spoke with representatives from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), who explained how developing XR standards can benefit the industry in the long term.

According to the IEEE, the organisation’s Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC) is working to develop XR to build learning tools for industrial and educational solutions.

Jennifer Rogers, Executive Officer of the Learning Technology Standards Committee for the IEEE-LTSC, explained how XR could develop educational tools to boost learner retention and engagement rates compared with lecture instructional styles.

EU’s EVOLVED-5G Project to Back Open XR Networks

The European Commission’s CORDIS, the governmental body’s research and development (R&D) division, provided updates on its EVOLVED-5G project aimed at facilitating an ecosystem of network applications (NetApps) for developers.

The new project will include XR manufacturing, machine-to-machine learning, the Internet of Things, and other technologies to build Europe’s industrial capabilities. Additional features will allow developers to create testbeds for networks, allowing the democratisation of 5G to third-party app developers.

Zuckerberg Teases Hands-Free Smart Glass Features

Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive of Meta, updated audiences on its updated Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, which may include new voice controls for audio, sending messages, and other features.

Despite not providing an official release date, the Menlo Park-based firm has also revealed new spatial anchors and voice controls for its upcoming software development kit (SDK) for the Quest headset.

Huawei, Singapore’s TIP Ink Deal for VR Theme Park

Huawei Technologies has partnered with Tiny Island Productions to build a Metaverse-based theme park using the Shenzhen-based firm’s cloud computing technologies.

The theme park will host shopping centres and zones for socialising and exploring, and is set to open in Singapore and potentially Shenzhen, reports revealed, adding mainland Chinese firms have voiced interest in additional collaborations.

According to a joint statement, Singapore’s 5G networks provided ‘optimal testbeds’ for hosting the VR experience and Huawei’s AI technologies would create “unique, personalized” experiences for users.

Meta, VictoryXR to Launch 10 Metaverse Campuses

Meta Platforms, Inc has inked a partnership with US virtual education firm VictoryXR to launch ten digital universities across the country in 2022 via the latter’s Immersive Learning platform, which incorporates digital twins to build accurate models of preexisting campuses.

Students joining the platform can socialise, navigate, and enter VR classes using Meta Quest 2 headsets, and the news comes after the launch of the first ‘Metaversity’ at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
